Alexandre Gomes came from behind to win the $2000 No Limit Holdem event at the 2008 World Series of Poker, defeating Marco Johnson heads up for the coveted WSOP gold bracelet and $770,540.
Marco Johnson is an accomplished online poker player and began cutting his teeth in live tournaments last year. Johnson has had some significant cashes in live poker, but this was his first real shot at a bracelet. With a big chip lead heads up, he got all-in against Gomes. Gomes had AT and Johnson had AA. The bracelet looked like a lock. The board, however, gave Gomes trip tens, and he sucked out to gain the chip lead. He would eventually bust Johnson, robbing the Las Vegas pro of his first bracelet.
Johnson, however, has almost half a million dollars to cushion the blow. Here are the official results:
1 - $770,540 - Alexandre Gomes
2 - $491,273 - Marco Johnson
3 - $326,812 - Ryan D’Angelo
4 - $274,101 - Robert Brewer
5 - $223,497 - Alan Cutler
6 - $177,111 - Kirill Gerasimov
7 - $134,942 - Sverre Sundbo
8 - $103,315 - Gabe Costner
9 - $71,687 - Dan Rome
