The $1500 H.O.R.S.E. event at the 2008 World Series of Poker attracted 803 players, including James Schaaf, who decided to make it the very first WSOP tournament he’d ever enter. As luck would have it, he took down the whole thing, earning $256,412 in the process.

Schaaf’s win is overshadowed by the bigger story; Phil Hellmuth’s 12th bracelet. In these huge fields, it’s extremely hard to capture gold. The fact that Hellmuth has done it 11 times already is impressive, but all of his bracelets are in texas holdem. Not only would this have been a record setting bracelet for Hellmuth, but it would have cemented him as a fantastic all-around poker player, not just an all-around tournament holdem player.

Hellmuth’s last shot comes in the 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event, which begins today. Here are the official results from the HORSE event.

1 - $256,412 - James Schaaf
2 - $158,933 - Tommy Hang
3 - $93,168 - Phil Hellmuth
4 - $68,505 - Esther Rossi
5 - $54,804 - Jason Dollinger
6 - $42,966 - Sam Silverman
7 - $32,992 - Victor Ramdin
8 - $27,511 - Matt Grapenthien
