No that headline is not a typo, I did NOT mean to say NY Mets–they are MY METS! After a dismal start to the season that saw a team expected to be among the elite in the National League stumble out of the gate, the New York Mets have won 10 in a row under new manager Jerry Manuel. After a poor start to the season that saw the team a full 6 1/2 games out of first place behind the Phillies and Marlins, the Mets made a bold move, firing manager Willie Randolph exactly one month ago. After a brief period of struggle while adjusting to their new manager, New York has finally appeared to turn it around.
Currently the team holds a share of first place, tied with their arch-nemesis Philadelphia Phillies for the top spot at 52-44. The team’s most recent victory came against the Cincinnati Reds in comeback fashion. Trailing 8-6 going into the ninth inning, David Wright smashed a game-tying two run Home Run before Carlos Delgado hit a tie-breaking single and Fernando Tatis another run-scoring double. All runs in the ninth were off of Cincinatti closer Francisco Cordero, who blew his 5th save in 24 chances. Wright, Delgado, and tatis accounted for all 10 of New York’s runs in the game, an impressive showing by the red-hot trio. What a surprise Tatis has been for a team that has lost LF Moises Alou for the year and RF Ryan Church for quite a significant period of time.
Finally, after struggling since their epic collapse last year, the New York Mets look like a team with a $138 million payroll. Clearly the team needed a spark, and firing Willie Randolph was a necessary move. Furthermore, it has become clear that the team cannot rely on the fragile Pedro Martinez for anything this year while big name free agent acquisition Johan Santana has been a mild dissappointment. However, the Mets savior has been Mike Pelfrey, who has looked like an ace in recent months. I guess this Mets fan here just hopes the team can continue to stay hot as they make their push towards the postseason.
