Unlike in most professional competitions, the favorite to win it all in a poker tournament rarely follows through. More times than not, there is no clear favorite anyway. At the Legends of Poker final six, John Phan was the clear favorite, and he did not disappoint.
Of the six players competing for the grand prize of $1,091,428 , five had never made a World Poker Tour final table. The other player was John Phan — a man making back-to-back appearances at the Legends of Poker final table. Phan won a back and forth heads up battle with Amit Makhija, the chip leader coming into the day to score the victory.
The heads-up battle took three and a half hours and each player suffered through huge swings as the chip lead swayed back and forth. In the end, it was Phan who showed the stamina to outlast his opponent and take down his first ever WPT title. Phan has now made three of the last six WPT final tables, and also won two gold bracelets at the World Series of Poker. With his most recent victory, Phan took a huge lead in the Card Player Player of the Year race, reaching 5,957 POY points representing a lead of 1,377 points over the number 2 player, Erik Seidel.
The final table results are as follows:
1st Place: John Phan — $1,091,428
2nd Place: Amit Makhija — $563,320
3rd Place: Zachary Clark — $281,645
4th Place: Paul Smith — $246,450
5th Place: Trong Nguyen — $211,245
6th Place: Kyle Wilson — $176,035
