College football has long been plagued by controversy and ineptitude in the ranking process. In fact, division one college football is perhaps the only sport where not every team involved has a chance to win a national title going into the season. With big money being the driving force behind the inherently flawed bowl system, dominant teams from mid-major conferences can kiss their title hopes goodbye — before they even line up to take a snap.

Take a hint BCS system: you are outdated and it’s time for a change! There is no better time to make this argument than right now, a time where the jumble at the top of the rankings makes it fairly certain that there will be no clear national champion, although some team will receive the distinction. Even division 1-AA has a playoff, so it has nothing to do with “can’t,” its simply about WON’T, and more specifically it’s about greed.

Let’s break down the national title scenario right now. With the Oklahoma Sooners‘ DESTRUCTION of the then undefeated and #2 ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders, there is now no clear number two team. The Texas Longhorns were the top ranked team in the nation before losing to Tech. Oklahoma was highly ranked before losing to Texas. All three teams play in the Big 12 south division and thus cannot meet in the conference title game. None of the three teams play each other again this year.

What does this mean? Simply, if all three teams win their final regular season game, they will all finish the season with one loss, all to each other. That means a computer will determine the Big 12 South champion and who earns the right to play Missouri in the conference title game. If that team beats Missouri, they will go to the national title game with the others left on the outside.

The SEC title picture is a little bit clearer with the undefeated Alabama Crimson Tide as the top team and the one-loss Florida Gators right on their heels. If both teams win-out in the regular season, they will meet in the SEC title game with the winner likely headed to the big game.

This is all well and good, but what about the nation’s other undefeated teams, Utah and Boise State, both ranked in the top ten (#7 and #9 respectively). Well, they are the aforementioned “never had a chance to win the national title no matter what their record” teams. Just sad really, especially considering Boise State’s history, defeating perennial power Oklahoma in a bowl game a few  years back.

WHAT A MESS!
